About Us
What we do
We help bereaved people through the grieving process by providing a confidential listening and support service. The service is free and open to anyone who lives in our catchment area. The section shaded green in this map shows our catchment area:

We cover the whole of the Borough of Worthing, as well as Clapham, Ferring, Findon, Lancing, Patching and Sompting (Postcodes BN11, BN12, BN13, BN14 and BN15) Our visitors are only available to clients who live in this area.

Who we are
The visitors all come from churches in the Worthing area. The Church of England churches in Worthing first set up Worthing Bereavement Care but we now have visitors from some of the other churches as well. The service is run by Christians but is open to anyone in our catchment area who wants to use it.
People's parish priests, pastors or ministers put them forward for training. Worthing Bereavement Care then trains and selects them as visitors. All the visitors are volunteers. The Reverend Colin Kassell, Chaplain of Worthing and Southlands Hospitals and a qualified counsellor, runs the very rigorous training course.
How it works
People can refer themselves by telephoning the Coordinator (01903 873622) or by sending a message. Sometimes referrals come through a doctor or other professional person caring for the client (with their agreement). The Coordinator then allocates a visitor to the client. The visitor agrees an initial number of sessions with the client. The agreement is usually for six sessions to begin with, followed by review. The content of the sessions is strictly confidential.
Each session lasts an hour. Meetings are usually at the client's home but sessions can be arranged at other places if required. Worthing Bereavement Care has access to rooms where the visitor and the client can meet in private without being disturbed.
